HISTORY MADE IN ELGIN

 

15 years ago Bastrop/Travis Counties ESD #1 was established to support both Elgin Volunteer Fire Department and McDade Volunteer Fire Department. That was a monumental time for the citizens of Elgin and McDade. Today, Monday October 10th we gladly introduce the first paid fire chief and full time employees, staffing an engine and Medical/Rescue 1 to assist with the ever growing needs of our community 24/7, 365 days a year.

For over 125 years, our volunteers have done a tremendous job providing coverage and will continue to be a great asset to the district.

WHO WE ARE

Bastrop/Travis Counties Emergency Services District #1 began in May 2007 after being approved by the voters of the proposed District. The District covers a large portion of northern Bastrop County and the extra-territorial jurisdiction of the City of Elgin in Travis County.  It is one of only a few districts in the state that cover two or more counties.  In a multiple-county district, the five (5) members of the board of commissioners must be elected by the voters of district. 

 

The District is responsible for funding and oversight of the Elgin and McDade Fire Departments along with the paid medical first responder unit housed in Elgin. The first responder unit runs on a 24/7 basis with one paid employee supported by volunteer first responders. The Elgin and McDade Fire Departments are staffed by volunteers.

 

Since the District was formed, it has been able to add over $2.3 million dollars of assets to the District’s area in the form of equipment and buildings.  Because of these additions, the District’s fire insurance rating has been upgraded to enable the citizens of the District to obtain lower fire insurance rates.
